1987 Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 'WGS' dial with 'Ghost' bezel

The Rolex Submariner reference 5513 lived a long, rich life—from 1962 to 1989—standing as the archetype of the no-date dive watch. Through pointed crown guards, gilt gloss dials, matte tritium eras, and case transitions, it quietly chronicled three decades of evolution. But toward the end of its production, the 5513 entered a final, often overlooked chapter: the glossy dial era.

Beginning around 1985, Rolex updated the 5513 with a high-gloss lacquered dial and applied white gold surrounds—traits more commonly associated with its date-equipped siblings. This transition reflected a broader shift within the brand, subtly refining even its most tool-driven watches. These versions blend vintage warmth with modern cues, and are now prized for their transitional significance.

Offered here is a Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 from 1987.

The glossy dial is in excellent condition with very little wear if any. The lume plots have aged to a lovely creamy patina that matches with that on the hands.

The case remains in strong condition, with thick lugs and some factory finishes still present. It shows normal signs of wear. The case back remains in the same condition. The bezel is crisp. The bezel insert has aged to a stunning light gray or ‘ghost’, and the original tritium pip/pearl matches in patina.

It is fitted on its original Rolex Oyster 93150 solid-links stainless steel bracelet with 580 end links, clasp code K3 and divers’ extension that shows normal stretch and wear for its age.

The watch is running well and keeping time, although service history is unknown.

The original acrylic crystal has some marks.
