1986 Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 16753 Black 'Nipple' dial

The Rolex GMT-Master reference 16753 was introduced in 1979 as the two-tone evolution of the iconic dual-time pilot’s watch. Sitting between the steel 16750 and solid gold 16758, the 16753 offered a blend of sporty utility and elevated luxury, often favored by those who needed function with a flash of gold. It retained the familiar 40mm Oyster case, rotating bezel, and independent 24-hour hand, but brought bimetallic sophistication to the jet age with its mix of stainless steel and 18k yellow gold.

Early examples of the 16753 are especially coveted for their glossy black “nipple” dials—so named for the raised gold hour markers that resemble small domes inset with tritium lume. These dials, lacquered to a mirror finish and accented in gold print, offer a visual richness that defines the transitional aesthetic of late 70s Rolex. Unlike the later flat matte or printed dials, these glossy versions were crafted with old-school opulence, echoing the gilt dial tradition of the 60s, but reimagined for a more contemporary audience.

Offered here is a Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 16753 with black ‘Nipple’ dial from 1986.

The black glossy dial is in excellent condition with very little visible wear. The lume plots have aged to a lovely heavy patina that matches with that on the hands.

The stainless steel case remains strong, with thick lugs, sharp bevels and factory finishes still present. It shows normal wear. The case back remains in the same condition. The 18k yellow gold bezel is in good condition too. The all-black bezel insert is great, having aged subtlety.

It is fitted on an unworn black leather strap with matching golden Rolex buckle.

The watch is running well and keeping time, as it has been fully serviced recently in July 2025.

The original acrylic crystal has some marks.
