The Day-Date ref. 180XX series launched in 1978 and stands as something of a transitional reference for the model. Things were moving swiftly for Rolex at the time, as evidenced by the fact that the range was only around until 1988, before the ref. 182XX family took over.
The ref. 18078 is a particularly special reference, and one fast becoming the new darling of collectors looking for the next big thing. With even the late run versions now more than 30-years old, they are just turning vintage and have started to emerge as neo-classics, albeit with a quirky twist.
Very much of its time, and no longer an option in the range, the ref. 18078 has what is known as a bark finish on its surround. In visual terms, it is somewhat akin to the engine-turned pattern seen on vintage Datejust models, where a series of decorative grooves would be etched around the perimeter. That style, however, is intentionally uniform and ornate (and not especially different to the traditional fluted design) while the bark is kept deliberately rough.
This example here is an 18K solid gold Ref. 18078 from 1986 with ‘Bark’ factory finish.
The condition of this piece is stunning, featuring a mint sunburst champagne dial and perfect lume plots aged to a creamy patina matching with that on the hands.
The case is presented in superb condition too, showing little wear and remaining sharp and unpolished. All gold hallmarks remain clearly visible, again being a sign of the unmolested condition, this example is in.
Furthermore, the watch comes on its original 19mm Rolex 18K gold President bracelet that shows little to no stretch.
The watch is running great and keeping time, although service history is unknown.
It is presented as a full set which includes the outer box with reference sticker, inner leather box, booklet and manuals leather wallet, Day-Date booklet, manual, hang tags, original purchase receipt and stamped guarantee papers showing it was sold by Fords Jewelers in June 1986.
This is indeed a great opportunity to own an astonishing example of a powerful watch such as a gold Rolex Day-Date.
