The Rolex Day-Date reference 18038, introduced in 1977 and discontinued in 1988, is a significant model in Rolex's prestigious Day-Date collection. Also known as the "President," it carries the legacy of the original Day-Date introduced in 1956, which was the first wristwatch to display both the day of the week (fully spelled out) and the date on the dial.
The 18038 came with various dial options, from classic champagne and black to more exotic designs, such as lapis lazuli and tiger’s eye stone dials.
Rolex introduced the “Jubilee” dial (also known as the "Computer" dial in the Japanese market) in 1985 to commemorate the brand's 80th anniversary, marking a significant milestone since its founding in 1905. The name "Jubilee" reflects the celebratory nature of the occasion. The “Jubilee” dial is a special and intricate dial design that was introduced by Rolex, primarily seen on the Day-Date models like the reference 18038. It's easily recognized for its unique, repeating "ROLEX" in a grid-like, mosaic style across the entire dial surface. This gives the dial a sophisticated, decorative look, distinct from Rolex's more traditional solid-color or sunburst finishes.
These dials were produced in a variety of colors, most commonly in champagne (golden), silver, and black. Some rarer “Jubilee” dials are adorned with diamond hour markers, while others may have simple stick markers or Roman numerals.
The “Jubilee” or “Computer” dial is less common than standard dials, making it particularly sought after by collectors who value the unique and luxurious appearance it offers. Over time, its rarity has contributed to a higher desirability for vintage Rolex watches that feature this dial, especially when combined with other premium details like diamond markers or precious metal cases.
Offered for sale here is a Rolex Day-Date Ref. 18038 with champagne “Jubilee” or “Computer” dial with very rare 6-9 factory set diamonds in 18K yellow gold from 1985.
The champagne “Jubilee” dial is in superb condition, showing only light wear. The factory set diamonds on the 6- and 9-hour markers remain intact and shiny. The original hands show a nice creamy patina hue on the hour hand, while the minute hand has lost its tritium. However, this is not noticeable as the dial color is similar to it.
The previously polished 18k yellow gold case is presented in good condition too, showing only little signs of recent wear. The 18k yellow gold bezel shows normal signs of wear. The case back remains in the same condition, with all gold hallmarks clearly visible. The inside of the case back is correctly stamped.
The sapphire crystal is clean.
The watch comes fitted on an unworn handmade leather strap with a matching yellow gold Rolex buckle.
It is running great and keeping time, as it has been recently serviced.
Macros of dial and case are available under request, as well as inner case back, movement and service pictures.
