The Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16800, introduced around 1980-81 and produced until 1989, is a key transitional model in the history of the Submariner line. It combined vintage features of earlier Submariners with modern upgrades that paved the way for the evolution of Rolex's dive watches.
The 16800 was the first Submariner to feature a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, replacing the acrylic crystals found on previous models like the 1680.
The water resistance of the Submariner 16800 was increased to 300 meters (1,000 feet), doubling the 1680’s rating of 200 meters. This reflected Rolex’s continual improvements in technical capabilities for professional divers and watch enthusiasts.
It also introduced the convenience of the quickset date function, thanks to the upgraded caliber 3035 movement, which also offered a higher frequency (28,800 beats per hour) than its predecessor (19,800 bph), improving precision. This allowed the date to be adjusted independently from the hour hand, making it easier to set.
Early models of the 16800 still retained certain vintage-style characteristics, such as a matte dial with painted tritium hour markers. However, by 1984, Rolex began transitioning to glossy dials with white gold-surround hour markers, which became a hallmark of modern Rolex design.
In essence, the 16800 serves as a bridge between the vintage Submariners and the more contemporary, modern versions. Collectors often seek it out for its blend of old-school charm and modern improvements, making it a highly desirable reference for enthusiasts.
Offered for sale here is a gorgeous example of a Rolex Submariner Ref. 16800 with glossy tropical “stardust” dial and faded lavender insert that dates to 1984.
The dial is stunning, featuring a lovely, uniform tropicalized glossy lacquer with “stardust” effect and vivid patina hue on the lume plots. The hands have aged to a slightly lighter tone.
The stainless steel case shows signs of previous polishing, but still preserves most of its thickness. It shows normal signs of wear. The case back remains in the same condition, and it is correctly stamped with the reference number. The original bezel insert is stunning too, featuring a faded mauve hue and an original matching pip/pearl. What a blast of character!
The original sapphire crystal has very minor marks.
It is in full working order and keeping time. The case back shows a fairly recent date of service; 12/2021.
It comes suited on its original Rolex Oyster 93150 stainless steel bracelet with 593 end links, clasp code J4 and diver’s extension that shows little stretch and normal signs of wear.
Macros of the dial and case are available under request, as well as movement and inner case back pictures.
