1981 Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 'Maxi dial MK II'

The Rolex Submariner 5513 was introduced in 1962 with no COSC printing on the dial (different from the 5512) and was the perfect tool watch for professional divers. First with the caliber 1530 and then, during the same year, with the caliber 1520 and updated crown-guard design.  

 

The last series of matte dials that Rolex used in the Submariners are known by collectors as the Maxi Dials. The characteristic of these dials are the oversized lume plots for better visibility

This particular example dates back to 1981. It features a beautiful and untouched Maxi MK II black matte dial. The lume plots have aged to a lovely creamy patina. The hands remain also untouched, aging to a matching tone.

 

The 40mm stainless steel case has previously been polished but remains thick.

 

The correct fat font bezel insert is gorgeous, aged to a slightly faded gray-blue tone with a wonderful creamy patina on the numbers, giving the watch so much character.

 

The domed crystal makes the dial look even bigger.

 

The watch is running good and keeping time, although service history is unknown.

 

It comes suited on the correct 20mm Rolex Oyster 93150 stainless steel bracelet with 580 endlinks correctly date stamped with the code G.
