Offered here is a Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 with ‘WGS’ tritium service dial from 1978.
With its 5.4 million serial, this example would have originally left the factory with a matte Maxi dial, more precisely with either a Maxi MK I, II or III, making its current tritium WGS dial a later addition likely during a service in the mid-1980s. Still, the glossy ‘WGS’ dial is in great condition, with very little visible wear and light creamy patina lume plots and matching hands that still glow under UV light.
It retains its thick original case, with sharp edges and little wear for its age. The case back remains in the same condition. The original and period-correct MK3 bezel insert is in great condition with a matching pip/pearl.
It is fitted on a Rolex Oyster 93150 solid-links stainless steel bracelet with 580 end links, clasp code N11 and divers’ extension that shows little wear and stretch for its age.
The acrylic crystal has some minor marks that could be removed.
The watch is running well and keeping time, although service history is unknown (except for the assumption of a service during the 1980s).
For the savvy collector, it offers an opportunity: whether to enjoy it as a striking neo-vintage Sub with a unique transitional aesthetic—or to source a period-correct dial and restore its full 1970s glory. Either way, it’s a piece that speaks to the living, breathing evolution of the Submariner legacy.
Macros of dial and case are available under request.
