1969 Rolex ‘Red’ Submariner Ref. 1680 MK2 'Meters First' dial

There are few phrases in vintage Rolex collecting that stir the soul quite like “Red Sub.” Officially known as the Submariner reference 1680, it marked a quiet revolution when it debuted around 1969: the first Submariner to carry a date complication. For a watch that built its name on unflinching simplicity, the cyclops lens and added utility were major shifts—ushering in a new era of functionality without sacrificing the Sub’s iconic DNA.

 

Among the most coveted variants are the early Meters First dials, where the depth rating reads “200m = 660ft” beneath the red SUBMARINER text. These early executions—known as Mark 1, Mark 2, and Mark 3—were produced only during the first couple of years and represent a small fraction of overall 1680 production. The MK II, like the one offered here, is distinguished by its subtle serif fonts and alignment details, and sits at the heart of this rarefied subset of red Subs.

 

For collectors, an early Meters First Red Sub isn’t just about the dial color—it’s about catching a precise moment in Rolex history, before the reference became mass-adopted, and while the brand was still refining the language of its first date-equipped diver. These early pieces offer not just beauty, but chronology, legibility, and legacy—all in one tough steel case.

Offered for sale is a Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 ‘Red Letter’ with MK 2 ‘Meters First’ dial which dates to 1969.

 

The very rare MK2 dial is preserved in beautiful condition showing only the faintest signs of wear. It features lovely patina lume plots that have aged to a light cream hue. The hands have aged a few shades darker. There can be found some slight hints of tropical brown under certain light conditions. Who knows who it will develop with time…

 

The case remains very thick and unmolested, showing thick lugs and prominent bevels. The case back remains in the same condition too. The steel bezel still preserves signs of oxidation or rust confirming its untouched and raw condition. The insert is out of this world, featuring a super fat font and having faded to a beautiful gray-blue hue, while still preserving the original matching tritium pip/pearl.

 

The original acrylic crystal has some minor scratches that could be easily buffed away.

 

It comes suited on its original Rolex Oyster 9315 folded-links stainless steel bracelet with 280 end links, clasp dated 3/70 and PAT. PEND. divers’ extension that remains in strong condition with light stretch for its age.

 

The watch is running great and keeping time, although service history is unknown.
