The Rolex Datejust reference 1601 is one of the most iconic and enduring models in the history of Rolex, first introduced in 1959 and produced until 1977. It is part of the Datejust line, which was originally introduced in 1945 as the first self-winding wristwatch with a date function that changed automatically at midnight. The Datejust 1601 became one of the most popular and recognizable versions of the model during its production.
With almost unlimited dial variations, the Datejust ref. 1601 is an extremely collectible reference. But some dials just hit harder than others. Amongst these rare variants we find the so-called "Confetti" dial. The “Confetti” dial is a particularly rare and sought-after variation, featuring a unique, colorful pattern.
Originally born as a black matte dial, the result of its aging process features specks of color scattered across the dial, in hues of blue, red, green, and yellow. This pattern resembles confetti, hence the name. The pattern is subtle and artistic, and it gives the dial a distinctive, almost whimsical look compared to the more traditional, solid-colored dials.
The “Confetti” dial is considered highly collectible due to its rarity and unique appearance. It represents an example of the creative dial variations Rolex experimented with during the 1960s and 1970s, reflecting a period of experimentation in watch design, albeit limited and not part of the standard production lineup.
Offered for sale here is a Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 with a lovely, rare, and very sought-after black ‘Confetti’ dial that dates to 1969, which also features a dash (or 'hyphen') between the words OYSTER and PERPETUAL, common only to early dials, and adding an extra rarity trait.
The stunning non-luminous matte black ‘Confetti’ dial, in pristine original condition, is a true marvel. Its intricate pattern features vibrant specks of blue, yellow, red, and green, each one perfectly scattered across the dial’s rich matte texture. The effect is mesmerizing, with the colors adding an element of life and vibrancy to the otherwise subtle design. The dial itself is flawless, and the original luminous hands are equally remarkable, remaining in excellent condition with little signs of aging and featuring a lovely creamy patina hue. This dial, rare and full of character, is a striking testament to the beauty of vintage Rolex craftsmanship.
The stainless steel case remains in good condition, preserved thick, and showing normal signs from use. The case back remains in the same condition. The 18k white gold fluted bezel remains crisp, letting show some normal marks from wear and age.
It is suited on its original Rolex Jubilee 6251H folded links stainless steel bracelet with 55 end links and matching clasp dated 4/68 that presents normal wear and stretch for its age.
The original acrylic crystal has some minor marks that could be easily buffed away.
It is running well and keeping time, as it has been fully serviced recently.
This is indeed a great opportunity to catch a Datejust with stunning ‘Confetti’ dial as these are being caught by savvy collectors and remain in their collections.
Macros of dial and case are available under request, as well as movement, inner case back and service pictures.
