The Rolex Submariner 5513 was introduced in 1962 with no COSC printing on the dial (different from the 5512) and was the perfect tool watch for professional divers. First with the caliber 1530 and then, during the same year, with the caliber 1520 and updated crown-guard design.
The first batches of the 5513 came with gilt dials until the end of the 1960s where Rolex changed them to matte dials. These early examples are the most sought after for savvy collectors, especially those in perfect condition and unique patinas.
The 5513 offered for sale here is one of the kind that shall not be missed or it will be gone forever.
Being part of the gilt era from 1966, it features a simply stunning gilt dial that has tropicalized in a fascinating way. Without losing its gloss, the lacquer has developed a caramel brown spotty pattern evenly spread throughout the surface. Remaining flawless, there is no presence of scratches or tool marks (anything that might be see on the pictures is on the crystal). The tritium lume plots have built a very attractive warm, golden patina that remains in 10/10 condition. There is no lume missing and no blackening. Just perfectly aged. It reacts as it should to UV light. The original gold hands remain in the same condition, matching perfectly. Tons of character that makes this watch unique.
The case is equally good. Featuring super sharp bevels, it shows signs of wear common to these tool watches. Remaining most probably unpolished in our honest opinion, it’s possible that it might have seen a very old, superficial, light sleeve polishing.
The case back remains in the same condition. It is stamped 5513 and 1/65 on the inside.
The bezel is also preserved unpolished with very sharp edges. The original, fat font, period correct, MK3 bezel insert remains in lovely condition too, having aged to a subtle purple hue that acquires a warmer tone when exposed under sunlight. The original pip/pearl retains a matching patina.
The original domed, acrylic crystal remains in great shape with only very minor, light scratches.
It is suited on the original 20mm Rolex riveted 7206 stainless steel bracelet with 58 end links and correct 1/66 clasp date stamp that also remains in great condition with very little stretch for its age.
The watch is running well and keeping excellent time although service history is unknown.
If this wasn’t enough, it is presented as a full set which includes the inner box and the guarantee papers. An additional nato strap is added to the set.
This is indeed a great opportunity to own a piece of Rolex history in collectors’ condition.
Macros of dial and case are available under request, as well as videos and movement and case back pictures.
