1958 Rolex Datejust Ref. 6609 Turn-O-Graph ‘Thunderbird’

Introduced in 1956, the Rolex Turn-o-Graph made its way onto the wrist of a pilot in the US Air Force's Thunderbird team, who did aerial demonstrations. Since then, Rolex started to market the Turn-O-Graph as the Rolex Thunderbird.

 

The Ref. 6609 was built from the base of the Rolex Datejust, but with 60-minute rotatable bezel, signature of the ‘Turn-O-Graph’.

 

Rolex discontinued the Ref. 6609 in 1959, replacing it with the Ref. 1625. It was made in two variants: two-tone steel and a yellow gold bezel, or steel with a white gold bezel. Unlike the Datejust, the Turn-O-Graph was never offered entirely in steel.

Offered here for sale is a Rolex Datejust Ref. 6609 ‘Turn-O-Graph’ from the late stages of production, particularly from the year 1958.

 

It features a ‘Pie-Pan’ silver dial with a lovely patina, that remains in great shape showing some aging and with all lume plots present, yellow gold hour markers, and yellow gold hands.

 

The rotative ‘Turn-O-Graph’ yellow gold insert is also preserved in nice condition, featuring a nice patina and no mayor dents or scratches.

 

The stainless steel case remains in good shape too, presenting normal signs of wear. The case back is found in the same condition.

 

It comes suited on a matching handmade leather strap with brushed-finish stainless steel buckle.

 

The watch is running great and keeping time as it has been fully serviced.
