Although it was by no means the very first Submariner that Rolex ever produced, many collectors regard the reference 5512 at the point in history where Rolex’s iconic dive watch collection first started to take on what would ultimately become its present-day form. Produced from 1959 until approximately 1979, the Rolex Submariner ref. 5512 brought about several notable changes to the brand’s famous dive watch family. For instance, it grew to 40mm from the 38mm case diameter of previous models, and it also introduced crown guards to the collection for the very first time.
Despite being such an important model from the Submariner’s history, Rolex is always moving forward and improving upon its designs and the reference 5512 was produced with several different variations during the span of its two-decade production run. Like most vintage Rolex watches, the Submariner ref. 5512 evolved over time, and it is this variation that makes it such an exciting model for today’s collectors.
Produced only for a very short period in 1966, and being the last to feature gilt dials, the “Bart Simpson” nickname was given to this particular batch after the distinctive shape of the Rolex ‘coronet’ which can be found on them. Amongst its rarity, they were mostly found in the ref. 5513, however, this oddity can also be seen on very few examples of the ref. 5512, which were produced in notably less numbers.
The watch offered for sale here is a Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512 with gilt ‘Bart Simpson’ dial in extraordinary condition which dates to 1966.
The dial is excellent glossy black gilt with little aging. Due to the way the lacquer was applied on the dial, these normally feature a “crazing” aging. Finding a fully gloss example makes the odds even more against. The lume has aged to a warm patina hue and the hands are matching. All lume glows brightly when exposed to UV as it should due to the mix of zinc sulphide and tritium. All printings are clearly visible, showing a bright gold color and silver for the last two lines.
The case remains thick and sharp, showing factory finishes, prominent lug bevels and little signs of wear. The original ‘Long 5’ bezel insert remains also in excellent condition and features a matching pip/pearl. The case back shows normal wear.
The original acrylic crystal remains clean.
It comes suited on its original Rolex Riveted 7206 stainless steel bracelet with 80 end links and clasp dated 1/66, matching the production period, that remains in great condition with hardly any stretch.
It is running great and keeping time, although service history is unknown.
Finding tip-top gilt dials is becoming almost impossible as they rarely surface the market. Having the opportunity of buying in this condition at this price won't last long. This is indeed a great opportunity to own a very rare batch of a rare reference in hardly seen condition.
Macros of dial and case are available under request, as well as videos.
