This example dates to 1979 and it features a flawless Maxi MK 3 black matte dial, also nicknamed ‘Lollipop’ as in this version the lume plots are almost touching the minute track making them look like a lollipop with the stick and the gum. This variation of the maxi dial is one of the rarest and most sough-after by collectors and are quite difficult to see surfacing the market in this condition. The lume plots have aged to a lovely creamy patina and match perfectly with the hands.
The original and period correct MK5.1 bezel insert with “incomplete 4” is stunning too, having faded by age in an even way, giving the watch so much character and a distinctive look. The original pearl has also aged to a matching patina.
The 40mm stainless steel case remains thick and sharp, with factory finishes. The case back shows some light signs of previous polishing.
The original superdomed crystal makes the lume plots look even bigger, like egg-shaped.
The watch is running well and keeping time, although last service was in 2011 at a Rolex Authorized Dealer in San Francisco, California.
It comes suited on the original 20mm Rolex Oyster 93150 stainless steel bracelet with 580 end links and VC date clasp code with divers’ extension.
