There’s something uniquely magnetic about the earliest Rolex GMT-Master ref. 1675s—those born at the intersection of innovation, adventure, and refinement. Introduced in 1959, the 1675 was Rolex’s answer to the golden age of air travel. Built for Pan Am pilots crossing time zones at transonic speed, it brought crown guards, aluminum bezel inserts, and a more muscular Oyster case to the GMT line. But in those first few years, Rolex was still experimenting—fine-tuning design language, refining production techniques, and navigating new regulations on lume materials. The results were nothing short of magical.
This particular configuration, dating to 1963, is a perfect storm of collectability. The gilt gloss dial, with its golden print swimming beneath glossy lacquer, carries the enigmatic ‘underline’—a discreet stroke beneath the text at 6 signaling Rolex’s quiet pivot from radium to tritium. It’s a dial that speaks of change, of caution, and of craftsmanship, produced for only a fleeting moment before being phased out. Encasing that dial is a PCG—or ‘cornino’—case, with pointed crown guards that were hand-shaped, distinct from the later rounded form. These early cases weren’t just functional—they were sculptural, a final whisper of the artisanal in Rolex's increasingly industrial age.
And then there’s the insert: once a vibrant Pepsi, now a deep, saturated fuchsia. Not painted that way, but faded—transformed by time, sun, and circumstance into something entirely unique. Few details capture the poetry of aging like these fuchsia bezels, each one a fingerprint of its own life.
Taken together—the underline dial, the cornino case, and the magenta halo—this GMT-Master isn’t just an early example. It’s a convergence of history, rarity, and patina. The kind of piece that doesn’t just tell time, but tells a story no other watch could.
It’s this rare confluence of early design traits, transitional dial details, and naturally aged beauty that elevates this GMT-Master into something more than a tool watch—it becomes a time capsule of Rolex innovation at its most charismatic.
The example offered here is a Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675 ‘PCG’ with Gilt ‘Underline’ dial which dates to 1963.
The original gilt ‘Underline’ dial remains fully glossy, showing only the faintest signs of wear, hardly noticeable to the human eye. The original lume remains puffy, clean, intact and has developed a nice yellow patina hue. The original hands show a patina a few shades darker. All text and printings are clean, clear and very bright.
The case remains in very strong condition, presenting thick lugs with prominent bevels which follow factory standards, remaining most probably in unpolished condition. It shows the wear that a tool watch should. The case back is in the same condition. The Pointed Crown Guards (PCG) remain sharp and thick. The original fuchsia insert is also in great condition, presenting bright, vivid hues. The inner case back is correctly engraved.
The original acrylic crystal is clean.
It is fitted on a Rolex Swiss Riveted stainless steel bracelet with 80 end links and 6251H clasp dated 4/71 that shows normal signs of wear and stretch.
The watch is running strong and keeping accurate time, as it has just been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
